HD Galvanized steel is obtained by dipping a cold rolled sheet in a molten bath of zinc to add a protective layer that will protect the material from rust. The coating thickness ranges from 100-380 gr/m2; most frequently between 120 – 180 gr/m2.
Under the name HD Galv we include other galvanized and coated products such as galvalume or galvannealed, and this is always mentioned in the column “remarks”.
Galvannealed or Galvalia: This protective coating consists mainly of zinc with an approximately 10% ferric content, which is symbolized by the suffix “ZF” in the quality. The surface of these products is dull and of a green/grey color with no spangle. It provides excellent weldability and color adhesion.
Galfan: This protective coating consists of 95% zinc + 5% to 10% aluminum and provides better protection against corrosion than regular galvanized steel (HDG) of equal weight. It is symbolized by the suffix “ZA” in the quality.
Galvalume: This coating is made of zinc, aluminum and silicon in a proportion of about 43%-55%-2%. It provides excellent corrosion, rust and heat resistance. It is symbolized by the suffix “AZ” in the quality.
Aluminized: This is another hot-dip steel coated with an alloy of aluminum and silicon. It is corrosion and heat resistant and symbolized by the suffix “AS” in the quality. The material is available in quality grades ranging from very soft, deep drawing quality up to stronger steel with higher yield points. The numeric value in the quality indicates the minimum Yield Point in N/mm2. The higher the number, the stronger the steel. Please note that steel with same Yield Point also can have different characteristics depending on the additional letters in the quality grade.
The strength of the material depending on the quality can be summarized as follows:
Hardness
Quality
Extra Mild
DDQ, DX54D – DX56D
Soft Commercial
DX51D – DX53D
Soft
S200GD – S350GD
Medium Strong
S380GD – S420GD
Strong and very strong
S450GD + Z or higher, >S500GD+Z
This classification is for reference only. The steel should be selected to suit the individual buyer’s needs and equipment. Norex does not accept any claims related to the use of this table.
The material has no serious defects in chemistry and properties. When we are not certain about the specific quality grade of a particular product, we indicate a range of qualities suitable for the product; for instance S185-280GD+Z. This means that the product’s quality may be between S185GD + Z and S285GD+Z.
Most of the material has E.U. origin. Test certificates are not available.
Norex will always provide to the best of its knowledge the correct description of a product’s quality and defects. If the material has any known defects, we will indicate the main reason for declassification in the column ”remarks”. Please note that one item can have more than one defect.
Most of the defects present in a galvanized coil are the result of a problem in the galvanization process or the zinc layer itself. For a complete description of the defects please refer to the document our section on “Defects” on Steel Info.
Please note that the described defect for each individual product is the main reason for declassification only and that all products may have a combination of defects and/or some other defects not described here.
You are always welcome to contact Norex if you need help or if you have any questions.
